Thermal therapy and heat therapy as Singapore Physiotherapy approaches

Thermal therapy is one of physiotherapy's treatment modalities. A commonly used term to describe this is the hot pack - it relieves and treat symptoms of non-acute and/or chronic pain, especially pains that are related to muscle spasms and tension.

Heat therapy dilates the blood vessels, allowing the blood vessels to expand, and this increases the blow flow to the muscles, skin and surrounding tissues. It induces a state of relaxation to muscles, relaxing spasms and even reduces stiffness of joints primarily caused by muscle tightness and problems.

These hot packs are applied before treatment to relax and loosen the muscles and joints for effective interventions and therapy, and after physiotherapy sessions to reduce muscle spasms or tensions post exercise or treatment. With new advances in therapy technology, you can now purchase microwave-friendly hot packs for self-management in the comfort of your own home, or office.

Some common conditions where it often is applied:

- Joint stiffness
- Muscle tightness or tension
- Neck and back aches and pains
- Rheumatic and joint pains
- Chronic pain eg knees, shoulders

You can use it over several times a day, with the use of one or more layers of towels, but you must take note of times where you shouldn't (keep) use it: people with acute pain, swelling, open wounds, and sensitive/'thin' skin should not use it without the physiotherapist to supervise the condition or situation.
