Re-education Physiotherapy Singapore

Re-education physiotherapy is utilized for a few different physiotherapy therapy interventions: mobility and sensory re-learning programs.

  1. Mobility (such as walking re-training; walking or limping is a very complex and dynamic mobility activity that involves the use of the entire human body as a whole). Walking is different from individuals to individuals, according to each one's individual anatomy and physiology, our age and conditioning to walk at what speed.
  2. Re-training Physiotherapy in our clinic will be used to help and teach our patients to learn how to walk again, normally, after an injury or disorder, or to help maintain their functional mobility if they have chronic conditions that affects their ability to walk.

As a result of abnormal walking patterns, it can cause muscle imbalances and weakening of muscles neglected, joint stiffness where the joints are not utilized, pain that can be chronic as well as nervous system disorders. We will first assess our patients' walking pattern, before creating a custom-made physiotherapy rehabilitation and re-education program that will be a combination of strengthening, improving active and passive range of motion, pain relief as well as walking re-education. We also will prescribe walking aids suitable for your level of mobility and function, as well as teach you how and when to use it safely and effectively.

  3. Sensation. Following an injury, one can have affected, impaired or poor sensation i.e. pins and needles all the time in the hand or the foot, unable to tell where the body part is in relation to the body, increased sensitivity to temperature or pressure or touch etc. All these causes an increase risk to falls or tissue damage.

Sensory re-learning plays an important part of teaching body parts or organs such as the skin with hypersensitivity to become normal again, to enable participation in daily tasks and activities. An example is when a patient post-operatively develops a hypersensitive thumb that feels pain with light touches, pressure regardless of light or deep pressure, and with exposure to hot or cold elements. The opposite can happen, where the patient cannot feel, and they might even sustain an injury without realizing it.

This impairs the patient's ability to handle coins, to use keys, to button, to comb their hair, to press button and the like. This will also impair his or her ability to work, to text someone, to hold a phone to talk to someone, to lift up a cup of coffee to their mouths to drink - the amount of impact is very great. It also exposes them of risks of injury, and even amputations.

What we need to do is gradual exposure to stimuli that are painful and nociceptive, in a safe, clinical environment to ensure nerve and sensitivity can be normalized.
