Manual Lymphatic Drainage Singapore

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Singapore

Sometimes known as manual lymph drainage (MLD), it is a form of very specialized massaged that helps the natural lymphatic circulation throughout your entire body.

The main focus of this massage is basically to activate your body's own lymphatic system to support the natural flow of lymphatic fluid and reduce swelling and fluid retention.

The main reason manual lymphatic drainage therapy was created in the first place to manage primary and secondary lymphedema. According to Wikipedia,  lymphedema is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. The lymphatic system returns the interstitial fluid to the thoracic duct and then to the bloodstream, where it is recirculated back to the tissues. Tissues with lymphedema are at risk of infection (read more on Wikipedia Lymphedema here)

Useful For The Following Conditions Too:

  • Swelling after surgery or traumatic event/injury
  • Post-treatment removal of cancerous cells
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Non-infected inflammatory conditions (e.g. sprains and strains)
  • Dermatological and skin conditions such as psoariasis
  • Circulatory imbalances
  • Sports and orthopedic injuries
  • Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome
  • Burns and burn injuries

Our Lymphatic System

Our lymphatic system is made of lympatic vessels, nodes and tissues; and is located almost everywhere in our bodies, except in our brains, nails, hair and joints.

This system is a vital system - a lymphatic system that is working well helps to maintain and boost our health and well being by removing waste materials from the interstitium (a liquid that covers most cells, which provides the cells with nutrients as well as helps with waste removal)

What the lymphatic system do is to carry excess items such as water, wastes and proteins from connective tissues and cells to and from the blood stream. During the process of carrying these items, the lymph is also cleaned and filtered at the same time, like an active filter.

Also, there are many immunity-related events that happen in our lymph nodes. There is an estimated 500 to 600 lymph nodes in our body, and many of them cluster in our underarms, our neck, our groin, our abdomen and our chest.

At any point in time, should any of the pathways becomes congested, stuck or injured because of damage. If this happens, then fluids and water can be retained and slowly build up in our tissues. Over a period of time, this can lead to fibrosis and slowly lead to breakdown in the tissues.

If there is an injury within the connective tissues, such as injuries and damage from burn injuries, long term inflammation or post-surgical injury, the lymphatic system must then transport the damaged structures and cellular byproducts away from the injury site.

The faster this can be done, the fast injury will be (means that you can get better faster).

That is why early diagnosis and regular, consistent therapy is a pre-requisite for good outcomes following manual lymphatic drainage singapore therapy.
