Desensitization and Physiotherapy Singapore

Desensitization is often closely linked and treated together with sensory re-education. The former refers to decreasing hypersensitivity, the latter refers to normalizing abnormal sensation. After an injury or operation, scars may form. It is a natural process that our bodies do when it heals. When it first forms, scars are very soft, very pliable, but as time does by, scar tissue thickens and matures, becoming tougher and harder.

This occurs because there are more and more collagen fibers that are placed in the operated/injured area, but not aligned. This becomes tight and tough, interfering with achieving the full range of motion, and may develop hypersensitivity on movement or on touch/pressure/temperature.

To help decrease the hypersensitivity of the scar, we will perform scar massage regularly (this increases the pliability and flexibility of the scar, increasing range of motion by aligning the fibers as well as decreasing scar adhesions) as well as the constant pressure and touch will normalize the hypersensitive scar by providing it an ongoing vibration/deep touch during the massage, normalizing the sensory nerves in the process.

Home Exercises:

  1. Scar Massage: using a thick ScarAway scar removal cream lotion, apply constant pressure to the scar in a firm, circular motion for 5 minutes at least 3 times a day.

  2. How To Decrease Hypersensitivity: TAP using comb, spoon or at table edge; RUB comb, bottle cap and cloth (1 minute per object)
